In the 60s and 70s, there was a trend in flooring of using linoleum. This type of flooring is made of durable plastic materials and is rolled out onto the base floor in big sheets then glued down. It lasted for years and the material made cleaning easy. After some years, the flooring becomes dull and harder to clean. The floor can become cracked and pieces can pull up from the floor underneath. This kind of flooring is harder to fix. The piece coming up needs to be cut out and a replacement piece put down. This leaves a noticeable square of flooring that is off color. More info: Baltimore flooring
